Party Tips
We, at nutfree.me, believe that you should plan your party the way you wish. All we ask is that you let us know if there will be peanut items served so that we can prepare to (a) provide an alternate snack for our child or (b) leave when the food is served, depending on the severity and age of our allergic child. If, for instance, you are serving peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, it would be great to know so that we can bring our own cream cheese and jelly sandwich or soybutter sandwich, or prepare our child to leave when it’s time. We realize that planning a party is a special event and if you wish to coordinate with us, individually, we will be happy to assist, but understand that it’s your child’s special day and as a guest, we just want to be a part of the fun (even if it means leaving when the food is the main event).
Dr. Robert A. Wood, a Professor of Pediatrics and Chief of Pediatric Allergy and Immunology, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, shares his rule of never eating a baked good that he didn’t personally prepare in his book, Food Allergies for Dummies. The one time he made an exception to the rule, he suffered his most severe reaction and required five shots of epinephrine! Wood, Robert A. Food Allergies for Dummies. Wiley Publishing, Inc., 2007. 71. Some of us are comfortable dropping off our child and some of us aren’t. Please bear with us as a party can easily turn into a life-threatening event for our allergic child. Giving you instructions on how to administer the epi-pen may not be what we have in mind when we arrive at your party – so many times, we stay, hoping to be helpful.
